Contrary to popular belief, this song was written in 1957 by Ewan MacColl for his wife, Peggy Sue. It was popularised by Roberta Flack, after appearing in the film 'Play Misty For Me', and topped the Billboard 100 in 1972 - retaining the top spot for six weeks, aswell as winning the Grammy Award for 'Song of the Year' three years later. A well deserved award.
